أَيَسومُنيwould he impose on me المَأمونُal-Ma'mun خِطَّةَthe course of عاجِزٍa weakling
أَوor ماnot رَأىhe saw بِالأَمسِyesterday رَأسَthe head of مُحَمَّدِMuhammad
Would al-Ma'mun impose a weakling's course on me?
Or did he not see Muhammad's head just yesterday?
نوفيwe tower عَلىabove هامِthe heads of الخَلائِفِthe caliphs مِثلَماjust as

We tower above the heads of caliphs, just as
Mountains tower above the crests of rugged hills.
وَنَحُلُّand we encamp فيin أَكنافِthe surroundings of كُلِّevery مُمَنَّعٍfortified place

And we encamp around every fortified place,
Until we subdue a towering height never climbed.

فَاِكفُفso restrain لِعابَكَyour sport عَنfrom لِعابِthe sport of الأَسوَدِthe black serpent
Indeed, those pursuing blood vengeance are kept sleepless;
So keep your sport away from the black serpent's sport.
لاdo not تَحسَبَنever suppose جَهليmy rashness كَحِلمِlike the forbearance of أَبيmy father فَماfor ... not

Do not mistake my rashness for my father's forbearance, for
The forbearance of elders is not like a beardless youth's rashness.
إِنّيindeed I مِنَam of القَومِthe people الَّذينَwho سُيوفُهُمtheir swords

Indeed, I am of the people whose swords
Killed your brother and honored you with a seat of power.

They raised your station after its long obscurity,
And rescued you from the lowest depths.
كَمmany مِنa كَريمٍnoble man قَبلَهbefore him وَخَليفَةٍand a caliph
أَضحىbecame لَناfor us دَمُهhis blood لَذيذَdelightful المَقصِدِto seek
Many a noble man before him, and many a caliph,
Had blood that became a delight for us to seek—
مِثلِlike اِبنِthe son of عَفّانٍ'Affan وَمِثلِand like وَليدِهِمtheir Walid

Like Ibn 'Affan, and like their Walid,
Or like Marwan, and like Muhammad.
