إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اِغتَدواthey set out in the morning فيin رَوعَةٍawe مِنfrom خُيولِهِمtheir horses
إِذا ما اِغتَدوا في رَوعَةٍ مِن خُيولِهِم
وَأَثوابِهِمand their garments قُلتَyou would say البُروقُthe flashes of lightning الكَواذِبُthe deceptive ones
وَأَثوابِهِم قُلتَ البُروقُ الكَواذِبُ
When they set out in the morning, inspiring awe with their horses
When they swagger in the ostentation of their steeds
and their garments, you would say: “Deceptive flashes of lightning.”
And raiment, say, "Those are false lightnings!"
وَإِنand if لَبِسواthey wear دُكنَdark-colored ones الخُزوزِsilk fabrics وَخُضرَهاand their green ones
وَإِن لَبِسوا دُكنَ الخُزوزِ وَخُضرَها
وَراحواand they set out in the evening فَقَدthen indeed راحَتhave set out in the evening عَلَيكَtoward you المَشاجِبُthe clothes racks
وَراحوا فَقَد راحَت عَلَيكَ المَشاجِبُ
And if they wear dark silks and green ones,
And though they don the green and russet cloak of the grave
and set out at evening, then clothes racks have come your way.
And depart, yet have the lowering clouds passed from thee.
