إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اِغتَدواthey go forth in the morning فيin رَوعَةٍsplendor مِنof خُيولِهِمtheir horses
إِذا ما اِغتَدوا في رَوعَةٍ مِن خُيولِهِم
وَأَثوابِهِمand their robes قُلتَyou would say البُروقُthe lightning flashes الكَواذِبُthe deceptive ones
وَأَثوابِهِم قُلتَ البُروقُ الكَواذِبُ
When they go forth at morn in the splendor of their horses
When their horses are adorned with fine trappings
And their robes, you would say, “Deceptive flashes of lightning!”
And their clothes are resplendent, say not "The lightning flashes false!"
وَإِنand if لَبِسواthey wear دُكنَdark varieties of الخُزوزِsilk fabrics وَخُضرَهاand their green ones
وَإِن لَبِسوا دُكنَ الخُزوزِ وَخُضرَها
وَراحواand they go forth at evening فَقَدthen indeed راحَتhave come at evening عَلَيكَtoward you المَشاجِبُthe clothes racks
وَراحوا فَقَد راحَت عَلَيكَ المَشاجِبُ
And if they don dark silks and green ones,
Though they don Arab dress and robes of honor,
And go forth at evening, then clothes racks have come your way.
Grief at their going is grief laid on you.
