They came from al-Sham, whose people are ill-omened,

with ill fortune, Iblis leading their army.

    تَرَكوهُ وَهوَ مُبَضَّعٌ مَحموسُ

    Cursed were they—indeed cursed for killing their imam;

they left him hacked to pieces and scorched.

And they took captive—oh, my grief!—Muhammad's daughters,

tearful, bareheaded, with no clothing to wear.

Ruin upon you! Woe to you! Were you content

with the Fire? Abased there is the prisoner.

You sold, for others' worldly gain, in your ignorance,

the honor of life—and it is precious indeed.

How ruinous that Umayyad pledge of allegiance!

Cursed is it, and paltry is the sellers' share.

Misery upon the one you pledged allegiance to! And I seem to see

your imam a prisoner in the midst of Hell.

O family of Ahmad, what you endured after him

from a band who are, by comparison, Magians!

How many tears flowed for you, and torn apart

on the day of al-Tufuf were souls grieving for al-Husayn!

Oh, my anguish! Your bodies lie in the open

there, while heads are atop the slender spears.

Patience, our masters! Soon you will be granted victory

by a day grim for the accursed one's family.

I have never ceased to follow you and your command,

and by it I govern my soul for as long as I live.
