ياO لِلرِجالِfor the men (an appeal for help) عَلىupon قَناةٍa spear يُرفَعُis raised
The head of the son of Muhammad’s daughter and of his appointed successor
The head of the son of Muhammad's daughter and his successor,
—O men!—is raised upon a spear.
Oh what great men lie on the bier raised up.
وَالمُسلِمونَand the Muslims بِمَنظَرٍwithin sight وَبِمَسمَعٍand within hearing
لاno جازِعٌone anguished مِنby ذاthis وَلاand no مُتَخَشِّعُone humbled
While the Muslims can see and hear,
While the Muslims look on, hearing and seeing,
Not one anguished by this, nor one humbled.
None frightened of this, and none humble.
أَيقَظتَyou awakened أَجفاناًeyelids وَكُنتَand you were لَهاfor them كَرىًslumber
وَأَنَمتَand you put to sleep عَيناًan eye لَمdid not تَكُنbe بِكَbecause of you تَهجَعُsleep at night
You awakened eyelids, though you had been their slumber,
You awakened eyelids while you were to them a protection,
And you put to sleep an eye that had not slept because of you.
And let sleep eyes that were not with you lulled.
كُحِلَتwere lined with kohl بِمَنظَرِكَat the sight of you العُيونُthe eyes عَمايَةًblindness
وَأَصَمَّand deafened نَعيُكَnews of your death كُلَّevery أُذنٍear تَسمَعُthat hears
At the sight of you, the eyes were kohled with blindness,
With your sight, eyes were darkened totally,
And the news of your death deafened every hearing ear.
And the news of your death deafened every ear that hears.
ماno رَوضَةٌgarden إِلّاexcept تَمَنَّتit wished أَنَّهاthat it
لَكَfor you مَضجَعٌa resting place وَلِخَطِّand for the outline of قَبرِكَyour grave مَوضِعُa site
No garden but has wished that it
No garden wished except that it
Were your resting place, and a site for the outline of your grave.
For your resting place, and for the line of your grave, was a spot.
