Sulayma departed, and now her cord is severed.

And they sent you off with suffering, showing you no pity.

Salama said, 'Where is the wealth?' I told her:

'Wealth, alas for you, met praise, and the two became companions.

Praise scattered my wealth among rightful claims, so they did not

leave any blame, nor did they leave me property.'

Salama said, 'Leave this milk-giving she-camel for us,

for children like downy sandgrouse chicks.'

I said, 'Keep her, for she is of use to them,

if no hungry night visitor alights seeking hospitality.'

When the guest sat clasping his knees and her milk-giving camel fell ill,

the children wept, and our pot sang for joy.

'This is my way, and this—know it—is my character.

So be content with it, or else be one of those who are angry.'

What cannot be missed, and what is already beyond pursuit—

so the sustenance written for me will never elude me.

I strive to seek it, while sustenance seeks me.

And sustenance seeks me more than I seek it.

Can you find anything, if you give it your attention,

as worth seeking and earning as reward and praise?

A people whose generous man is peerless, and whose horseman

is peerless, and whose poet is peerless when his lineage is stated.
