Sulayma departed, and by evening her cord was severed.
Sulaima appeared and her rope broke
And they sent you off with suffering, showing you no pity.
And they gave you provisions, though they left you no water skin
قالَتsaid سَلامَةُSalama أَينَwhere المالُthe wealth قُلتُI said لَهاto her
المالُthe wealth وَيحَكُalas for you لاقىmet الحَمدَpraise فَاِصطَحَباso the two became companions
Salama said: Where is the wealth? I told her:
Salama said, where is the money? I said,
Wealth—alas for you—met praise, and the two became companions.
Woe to you! It met Al-Hamd (praise) and they became companions
الحَمدُpraise فَرَّقَdistributed ماليmy wealth فيamong الحُقوقِrightful claims فَماso not

Praise dispersed my wealth among rightful claims, so
Al-Hamd scattered my money amongst the rights
They left no blame, nor left me any property.
It left me neither blame nor any bits

Salama said: Leave this milk-giving she-camel for us,
Salama said, leave this milk to us
For little children like downy sandgrouse chicks.
For children like the chicks of pigeons, tender

I said: Keep her, for she provides sustenance for them,
I said, keep it, in it there is joy for them
If no hungry night-visitor alights seeking hospitality.
If no night visitor comes seeking the abodes out of hunger

When the guest sat with his knees drawn up and her milch-camel was stricken,
When the guest arrived hungry and his wrists became emaciated
The children wept, and our cooking pot sang for joy.
The children cried and our cooking pot sang cheerfully
هَذيthis سَبيليmy way وَهَذاand this فَاِعلَميso know خُلُقيmy character

This is my way, and this—know it—is my character.
This is my way and know my manners thus
So be content with it, or be among those who grew angry.
Be pleased with it or be one of those who became angry
ماwhat لاnot يَفوتُslips away وَماand what قَدalready فاتَhas passed مَطلَبُهُits pursuit

What does not slip away, and what is already beyond pursuit—
What is not missed and what - its pursuit - is missed
So the sustenance that was decreed will never elude me.
Sustenance will never elude me, that which is decreed
أَسعىI strive لِأَطلُبَهُto seek it وَالرِزقُand sustenance يُطلِبُنيseeks me

I strive to seek it, and sustenance seeks me;
I strive to seek it and sustenance seeks me
And sustenance seeks me more than I seek it.
And sustenance is more of a seeker of me than I of it

Can you find anything, if you take pains over it,
Can you find anything, if you were earnest in it
Like reward and praise, to seek out and earn?
Like reward and praise, frequented and earned?

A people whose generous man is peerless, and whose horseman
A people whose noble one is unique, whose horseman
Is peerless, and whose poet is peerless when his lineage is traced.
Is unique, and whose poet is unique when traced
