اِذكُرRemember أَباAbu (father of) جَعفَرٍJa'far حَقّاًa rightful claim أَمُتُّI claim a bond بِهِthrough it
اِذكُر أَبا جَعفَرٍ حَقّاً أَمُتُّ بِهِ
أَنىthat I وَإِيّاكَand you مَشغوفانِboth enamored بِالأَدَبِof literature
أَنى وَإِيّاكَ مَشغوفانِ بِالأَدَبِ
Remember, Abu Ja'far, a claim by which I assert my bond with you:
Remember Abu Ja'far truly, I die for him
That you and I are both enamored of literature,
However I long for you, we both love literature
وَأَنَّناand that we قَدindeed رَضَعناhave suckled الكَأسَthe cup دِرَّتَهاits milk
وَأَنَّنا قَد رَضَعنا الكَأسَ دِرَّتَها
وَالكَأسُand the cup دِرَّتُهاits milk حَظٌّa share مِنَin النَسَبِkinship
وَالكَأسُ دِرَّتُها حَظٌّ مِنَ النَسَبِ
And that we have suckled the cup's milk;
We have drunk from the cup again and again
And the cup's milk is a share in kinship.
The cup is an inheritance, a fate from ancestry
