وَلا عَزاءٌ إِذا أَهلُ البَلا رَقَدوا
Praise be to God—neither patience nor fortitude,
No patience, no resilience,
Nor consolation when the people of affliction lie asleep.
No solace when disaster's people sleep.
خَليفَةٌa caliph ماتَdied لَمdid not يَحزَنgrieve لَهُfor him أَحَدٌanyone

وَآخَرٌand another قامَrose لَمdid not يَفرَحrejoice بِهِin him أَحَدُanyone
وَآخَرٌ قامَ لَم يَفرَح بِهِ أَحَدُ
A caliph died; no one grieved for him.
A caliph died, no one mourned him,
And another rose; no one rejoiced in him.
Another rose, no one welcomed him.
فَمَرَّthen passed هَذاthis one وَمَرَّand passed الشُؤمُill fortune يَتبَعُهُfollows him
فَمَرَّ هَذا وَمَرَّ الشُؤمُ يَتبَعُهُ
وَقامَand rose هَذاthis one فَقامَso rose الشُؤمُill fortune وَالنَكَدُand misery
وَقامَ هَذا فَقامَ الشُؤمُ وَالنَكَدُ
Then this one passed, and ill fortune passed, following him.
So one passed on, ill omens following,
And this one rose, so ill fortune and misery rose.
The next arose, gloom and despair too.
