O sons of Malik, guard your eyelids against slumber.
O sons of Malik, guard your eyes from sleep
And do not sleep after Ibn Nasr ibn Malik.
And do not slumber after the son of Nasr, son of Malik
فَقَدfor indeed حَمَلَتهُcarried him لِلقُبورِto the graves مَطِيَّةٌa mount
أَنافَتrose high بِهاديهِwith his neck عَلىabove شَخصِthe body of بابَكِBabak
For a mount has carried him to the graves,
For a mare has carried him to the graves
Raising his neck above Babak's body.
Pacing gently with him to your door
وَسُلّواand draw مِنَfrom الأَجفانِthe scabbards كُلَّevery مُهَنَّدٍIndian-steel sword
بَصيرٍskilled بِضَربٍin striking لِلطُلىat the necks مُتَدارِكِin quick succession
And draw from the scabbards every Indian-steel sword,
And ask every weeping, keen-sighted one
Skilled in striking necks with successive blows.
To quickly make preparations for the departed
يَقومُarises بِهِthrough it لِلهاشِمِيّاتِfor the Hashimite women مَأتَمٌa mourning gathering
لَهُit has ضَجَّةٌa clamor يَبكيweeps بِهاbecause of it كُلُّevery ضاحِكِlaughing person
Through it arises a mourning gathering for the Hashimite women,
Hold a funeral for the Hashimites
Whose clamor makes every laughing soul weep.
With loud wailing that makes every laugher weep
تُذَكِّرُهُمreminds them قَتلىthe slain بِبَدرٍat Badr تَنوشُهُمsnatch at them
سِباعٌbeasts of prey وَطَيرٌand birds مِنamong سِباعِbeasts of prey بَوارِكِcrouching
It reminds them of the slain at Badr, preyed upon
Reminding them of the dead at Badr, torn apart
By beasts and birds among crouching predators.
By beasts and birds of prey, ripping them open
كَماjust as فَتَكَتstruck fatally أَسيافُهُمtheir swords بِمُحَمَّدٍat Muhammad
وَهَدَّتand demolished مَبانيthe structures of عَرشِهِhis throne المُتَماسِكِsolid
Just as their swords struck Muhammad down,
As their swords did to Muhammad
And demolished the structures of his solid throne.
And shook apart his solid, firm throne
فَطُلَّso went unavenged دَمُthe blood of المَخلوعِthe deposed man وَاِنتُهِكَتand were plundered لَهُbelonging to him
ذَخائِرُtreasures مِنof مَنقوشِهِhis minted coin وَسَبايِكِand ingots
So the deposed man's blood went unavenged, and plundered were his
So the blood of the deposed pours out
Treasures of his minted coin and ingots.
And his treasures and jewelry are pillaged
فَإِنso if غُصَّchokes هَرونٌHarun بِجُرعَةِon the draught of عَمِّهِhis paternal uncle
فَأَيسَرُthen the easiest مَفقودٍone to lose وَأَهوَنُand the least consequential هالِكِone who perishes
So if Harun chokes on his uncle's draught,
If Harun is pained by his uncle's death
Then he is the easiest loss to bear, the least consequential of the dead.
Then every other loss and death is easier
