أَياO ذاpossessor of اليَمينَينِthe two right hands وَالدَعوَتَينِand the two calls
أَيا ذا اليَمينَينِ وَالدَعوَتَينِ
وَمَنand one who عِندَهُin his possession العُرفُkindness وَالنائِلُand bounty
وَمَن عِندَهُ العُرفُ وَالنائِلُ
O possessor of the two right hands and the two calls,
O you of two oaths and prayers,
And you who have kindness and bounty,
O you who has custom and who attains,
أَتَرضىare you content? لِمِثلِيَfor someone like me أَنّيthat I مُقيمٌremaining
أَتَرضى لِمِثلِيَ أَنّي مُقيمٌ
بِبابِكَat your door مُطَّرَحٌcast aside خامِلُunregarded
بِبابِكَ مُطَّرَحٌ خامِلُ
Are you content that one like me should remain
Are you pleased that I remain
At your door, cast aside and unregarded?
At your door, lying listless?
رَضيتُI have been content مِنَof الوُدِّaffection وَالعائِداتِand favors
رَضيتُ مِنَ الوُدِّ وَالعائِداتِ
وَمِنand of كُلِّall ماthat which أَمَّلَhoped for الآمِلُthe hopeful one
وَمِن كُلِّ ما أَمَّلَ الآمِلُ
As my share of affection and favors, I have been content,
I am content with friendship and returns,
And of all that a hopeful man has hoped for,
And all that the hopeful wished for,
بِتَسليمَةٍwith a single greeting بَينَbetween خَمسٍfive وَسِتٍّand six
بِتَسليمَةٍ بَينَ خَمسٍ وَسِتٍّ
إِذاwhen ضَمَّكَgathers you in المَجلِسُthe assembly الحافِلُcrowded
إِذا ضَمَّكَ المَجلِسُ الحافِلُ
With a single greeting between five and six,
With a greeting between five and six,
When the crowded assembly gathers you in.
When the crowded assembly surrounds you.
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَرضىbe content بِذاwith this مَنfrom سِواكَother than you
وَما كُنتُ أَرضى بِذا مَن سِواكَ
أَيَرضىwould he be content? بِذاwith this رَجُلٌa man عاقِلُsensible
أَيَرضى بِذا رَجُلٌ عاقِلُ
And I would not accept this from anyone but you;
And I wouldn’t be content with less than you,
Would a sensible man be content with this?
Would a sane man be content with that?
وَإِنand if نابَintervened شُغلٌbusiness فَفيthen in دونِless than ماwhat
وَإِن نابَ شُغلٌ فَفي دونِ ما
تُدَبِّرُهُyou manage it شُغُلٌwork شاغِلُengrossing
تُدَبِّرُهُ شُغُلٌ شاغِلُ
And if business has intervened, even less than what
And if care preoccupies, still beneath what
You manage is work enough to keep one occupied.
You manage is preoccupying care.
عَلَيكَupon you السَلامُpeace فَإِنّيfor I اِمرُؤٌa man
عَلَيكَ السَلامُ فَإِنّي اِمرُؤٌ
إِذاwhen ضاقَgrew cramped بيfor me بَلَدٌa land راحِلُone who departs
إِذا ضاقَ بي بَلَدٌ راحِلُ
Peace be upon you, for I am a man
Peace be upon you, for I am a man,
Who departs when a land grows too cramped for me.
Who, if a land tightens around him, departs.
