ياO أُمَّةًnation قَتَلَتkilled حُسَناًHasan عَنوَةًby force
لَمdid not تَرعَhonor حَقَّthe right اللَهِof God فيهِconcerning him فَتَهتَديand so be guided
O nation that killed Hasan by force,
O nation that unjustly killed Hussein
You did not honor God's right concerning him, that you might be guided.
You did not care for Allah's rights to guide you
قَتَلوهُthey killed him يَومَon the day of الطَفِّal-Taff طَعناًby stabbing بِالقَناwith spears

They killed him on the day of al-Taff, stabbing him with spears,
They killed him at Karbala, stabbing with spears
Despoiling him and hacking him with the death-dealing sword.
Plundering and looting with sharpened swords

And how often he called out to them with his words:
And for so long he called out to them with his words
"My grandfather, the Prophet, is your adversary at the appointed meeting.
My grandfather the Prophet will face you on the promised day
جَدّيmy grandfather النَبِيِّthe Prophet وَأَبيand my father عَلِيٌّAli فَاِعلَمواso know

My grandfather is the Prophet, and my father is Ali—so know this!
My grandfather the Prophet and my father Ali, so know
And my glory is Fatimah the pure, the source of my lineage.
The pride is Fatima the virtuous, defiant
ياO قَومُpeople إِنَّindeed الماءَthe water يَلمَعُgleams بَينَكُمamong you

O people, the water gleams among you,
O people, water shimmers among you all
Yet I die, my innards parched and burning.
And I die thirsty in the harsh desert heat
قَدindeed شَفَّنيhas wasted me عَطَشيmy thirst وَأَقلَقَنيand has troubled me الَّذيthat which

My thirst has wasted me, and I am troubled by
My thirst has tortured me, and troubled me is
The exhausting weight of iron that I bear."
The weight of this oppressive iron upon me
قالواthey said لَهُto him هَذاthis عَلَيكَfor you مُحَرَّمٌforbidden
حَتّىuntil تُبايِعَyou pledge allegiance لِلغَبِيِّto the fool الأَسوَدِblack
They said to him, "This is forbidden to you
They told him this is forbidden to you
Until you pledge allegiance to the black fool."
Until you pledge allegiance to the dark ignorant one
فَأَتاهُthen it came to him سَهمٌan arrow مِنfrom يَدٍa hand مَشؤومَةٍill-omened
مِنfrom قَوسِthe bow of مَلعونٍan accursed man خَبيثِvile المَولِدِbirth
Then an arrow came to him from an ill-omened hand,
So an arrow came to him from an ill-omened hand
From the bow of an accursed man of vile birth.
From the cursed, evil-born bowman's bow

O eye, be generous with tears and let them flow,
Oh my eyes, be generous with tears and neglect me
And weep for Husayn, the lord, son of the lord.
And cry for Hussein the master, son of the master
