إِنَّindeed المَشيبَgray hair رِداءُthe mantle الحِلمِforbearance وَالأَدَبِand refinement
إِنَّ المَشيبَ رِداءُ الحِلمِ وَالأَدَبِ
كَماjust as الشَبابُyouth رِداءُthe mantle اللَهوِamusement وَاللَعِبِand play
كَما الشَبابُ رِداءُ اللَهوِ وَاللَعِبِ
Indeed, gray hair is the mantle of forbearance and refinement,
Gray hair is the mantle of wisdom and manners
just as youth is the mantle of amusement and play.
Just as youth is the mantle of frivolity and play
تَعَجَّبَتshe was surprised أَنthat رَأَتshe saw شَيبيmy gray hair فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her
تَعَجَّبَت أَن رَأَت شَيبي فَقُلتُ لَها
لاdo not تَعجَبيbe surprised مَنwhoever يَطُلlasts long عُمرٌa lifetime بِهِfor him يَشِبِgrows gray
لا تَعجَبي مَن يَطُل عُمرٌ بِهِ يَشِبِ
She was surprised to see my gray hair, so I said to her:
She was surprised when she saw my gray hair, so I said to her
Do not be surprised: whoever lives long grows gray.
Do not be surprised - he who lives long will gray
شَيبُgray hair الرِجالِmen لَهُمfor them زَينُan adornment وَمَكرُمَةٌand an honor
شَيبُ الرِجالِ لَهُم زَينُ وَمَكرُمَةٌ
وَشَيبُكُنَّand your gray hair (you women) لَكُنَّfor you women العارُdisgrace فَاِكتَئِبيso be dejected
وَشَيبُكُنَّ لَكُنَّ العارُ فَاِكتَئِبي
Men’s gray hair is an adornment and an honor for them,
Gray hair of men is beautiful and honorable
but your gray hair is a disgrace to you women, so be dejected.
While your gray hair is shameful, so be depressed
فيناin us لَكُنَّfor you women وَإِنand even if شَيبٌgray hair بَداappears أَرَبٌan object of desire
فينا لَكُنَّ وَإِن شَيبٌ بَدا أَرَبٌ
وَلَيسَand there is not فيكُنَّin you women بَعدَafter الشَيبِgray hair مِنany أَرَبِobject of desire
وَلَيسَ فيكُنَّ بَعدَ الشَيبِ مِن أَرَبِ
In us you women find something to desire, even if gray hair appears,
Among us when gray appears, it is acceptable
but in you women, once your hair turns gray, there is nothing to desire.
While in you all, after graying there is no acceptance
