لَئِنif indeed كُنتَyou are لاnot توليbestow يَداًa favor دونَwithout إِمرَةٍan office of authority
لَئِن كُنتَ لا تولي يَداً دونَ إِمرَةٍ
فَلَستَthen you are not بِمولٍone who bestows نائِلاًbounty آخِرَto the end of الدَهرِtime
فَلَستَ بِمولٍ نائِلاً آخِرَ الدَهرِ
If indeed you bestow no favor without holding office,
If you do not lend a hand without being commanded,
Then you will bestow no bounty to the end of time.
Then you are no lord, attaining glory at the end of time.
فَأَيُّfor what إِناءٍvessel لَمhas not يَفِضoverflowed عِندَat مَلئِهِits filling
فَأَيُّ إِناءٍ لَم يَفِض عِندَ مَلئِهِ
وَأَيُّand what بَخيلٍmiser لَمhas not يُنِلgiven ساعَةَat the time of الوَفرِplenty
وَأَيُّ بَخيلٍ لَم يُنِل ساعَةَ الوَفرِ
For what vessel has not overflowed when filled?
What vessel has not poured out when filled?
And what miser has not given in a time of plenty?
What miser has not spent in a moment of plenty?
وَلَيسَand is not الفَتىthe noble man المُعطىthe giver عَلىin اليُسرِprosperity وَحدَهُit alone
وَلَيسَ الفَتى المُعطى عَلى اليُسرِ وَحدَهُ
وَلَكِنَّهُbut he is المُعطيthe giver عَلىin العُسرِhardship وَاليُسرِand prosperity
وَلَكِنَّهُ المُعطي عَلى العُسرِ وَاليُسرِ
And the noble man is not one who gives in prosperity alone,
The noble youth is not just one who gives in ease,
But he is one who gives in hardship and prosperity.
But one who gives in hardship and in ease.
