لَمdid not أَرَI see صَفّاًa row مِثلَlike صَفِّthe row of الزُطِّthe Zutt
تِسعينَninety مِنهُمof them صُلِبواwere crucified فيin خَطِّa line
I have seen no row like the row of the Zutt:
I have not seen a row like the row of az-Zutt
Ninety of them were crucified in a line,
Ninety of them were crucified in a line
كَأَنَّماas though غَمَّستَهُمyou dipped them فيin نَفطِnaphtha
مِنof كُلِّeach عالٍhigh جِذعُهُhis tree trunk بِالشَطِّbeside the riverbank
As though you had dipped them in naphtha,
As if you had dipped them in oil
Each with his tree trunk towering beside the riverbank.
Each lofty body is leaning to the side
كَأَنَّهُas though he فيupon جِذعِهِhis tree trunk المُشتَطِّtowering
أَخوone possessed of نُعاسٍdrowsiness جَدَّwas intent فيon التَمَطّيstretching
As though he, upon his towering tree trunk,
As if in its leaning body
Were a drowsy man intent on stretching,
A brother of Na'as, serious in exertion

Who has drifted into sleep but has not snored.
Sleep had overtaken him, and he did not sleep
