نَصَحتُI gave counsel فَأَخلَصتُso I made sincere النَصيحَةَthe counsel لِلفَضلِfor al-Fadl
وَقُلتُand I spoke فَسَيَّرتُso I circulated المَقالَةَthe words فيabout الفَضلِal-Fadl
I gave counsel, making my counsel sincere for al-Fadl.
I gave advice and rendered sincere counsel,
And I spoke, circulating my words about al-Fadl.
And I spoke and guided my words with merit.
أَلاbehold إِنَّindeed فيin الفَضلِal-Fadl اِبنِson of سَهلٍSahl لَعِبرَةًsurely a lesson
إِنِif اِعتَبَرَlearns a lesson الفَضلُal-Fadl اِبنُson of مَروانَMarwan بِالفَضلِfrom al-Fadl
Behold, in al-Fadl ibn Sahl there is surely a lesson,
Indeed, in the merit of Ibn Sahl is a lesson,
If al-Fadl ibn Marwan learns from al-Fadl.
If merit itself would learn from Ibn Marwan's merit.
وَفيand in اِبنِthe son of الرَبيعِal-Rabiʿ الفَضلِal-Fadl لِلفَضلِfor al-Fadl زاجِرٌa warning
إِنِif اِزدَجَرَtakes warning الفَضلُal-Fadl اِبنُson of مَروانَMarwan بِالفَضلِfrom al-Fadl
And in al-Fadl ibn al-Rabiʿ is a warning for al-Fadl,
And in Ibn al-Rabi's merit, merit has a deterrent
If al-Fadl ibn Marwan takes warning from al-Fadl.
If merit itself would be deterred by Ibn Marwan's merit.
وَلِلفَضلِand for al-Fadl فيin الفَضلِal-Fadl اِبنِson of يَحيىYahya مَواعِظٌadmonitions
إِنِif اِتَّعَظَtakes heed الفَضلُal-Fadl اِبنُson of مَروانَMarwan بِالفَضلِfrom al-Fadl
And in al-Fadl ibn Yahya are admonitions for al-Fadl,
And for merit, in the merit of Ibn Yahya are admonitions,
If al-Fadl ibn Marwan takes al-Fadl’s lesson to heart.
If merit itself would be admonished by Ibn Marwan's merit.
إِذاwhen ذُكِرواthey are mentioned يَوماًone day وَقَدand already صِرتَyou have become رابِعاًa fourth
ذُكِرتَyou will be mentioned بِقَدرِin proportion to السَعيِthe striving مِنكَon your part إِلىtoward الفَضلِexcellence
When they are mentioned one day, and you have become a fourth,
When they are mentioned one day and you have become the fourth,
You will be mentioned in proportion to your striving for excellence.
You will be mentioned according to your striving for merit.
فَأَبقِso leave behind جَميلاًsomething good مِنof حَديثٍa report تَفُزyou may prosper بِهِthrough it
وَلاand do not تَدَعِabandon الإِحسانَdoing good وَالأَخذَand holding fast بِالفَضلِto excellence
So leave behind a good report through which you may prosper,
So keep beautiful from a tradition you excel in,
And do not abandon doing good and holding fast to excellence.
And do not neglect benevolence and grasping merit.
فَإِنَّكَfor you قَدalready أَصبَحتَhave become لِلمُلكِof the kingdom قَيِّماًa steward
وَصِرتَand you have become مَكانَin the place of الفَضلِal-Fadl وَالفَضلِand al-Fadl وَالفَضلِand al-Fadl
For you have now become the kingdom’s steward,
For you have become the steward of the kingdom,
And have taken the place of al-Fadl and al-Fadl and al-Fadl.
And you have become the place of merit, and merit, and merit.
وَلَمand not أَرَI see أَبياتاًverses مِنَof الشِعرِpoetry قَبلَهاbefore these
جَميعُall قَوافيهاtheir rhymes عَلىending in الفَضلِal-Fadl وَالفَضلِand excellence
And never before these have I seen verses
And I have not seen verses of poetry like them before,
Whose rhymes all end in al-Fadl and excellence.
All of its rhymes upon merit and merit.
وَلَيسَand there is not لَهاin them عَيبٌa flaw إِذاwhen هِيَthey أُنشِدَتare recited
سِوىexcept أَنَّthat نُصحيmy counsel الفَضلَal-Fadl كانَwas مِنَof الفَضلِsuperfluity
And they have no flaw when recited,
It has no flaw when it is recited,
Except that my counsel to al-Fadl was superfluous.
Except that my advice to excel was from merit itself.
