هَجَرتُكَ لَم أَهجُركَ مِن كُفرِ نِعمَةٍ

هَجَرتُكَ لَم أَهجُركَ مِن كُفرِ نِعمَةٍ

وَهَل يُرتَجى نَيلُ الزِيادَةِ بِالكُفرِ

وَهَل يُرتَجى نَيلُ الزِيادَةِ بِالكُفرِ

I forsook you, but not out of ingratitude for a favor.

I did not abandon you out of ingratitude

And can one hope to gain more through ingratitude?

For who hopes to gain more by showing ingratitude?

وَلَكِنَّني لَمّا أَتَيتُكَ زائِراً

وَلَكِنَّني لَمّا أَتَيتُكَ زائِراً

وَأَفرَطتَ في بِرّي عَجَزتُ عَنِ الشُكرِ

وَأَفرَطتَ في بِرّي عَجَزتُ عَنِ الشُكرِ

But when I came to you as a visitor,

Rather, when I came to you as a visitor

And you lavished kindness on me, I could not thank you enough.

And you were extremely kind to me, I was unable to show gratitude

فَمِ الآنَ لا آتيكَ إِلّا مُسَلِّماً

فَمِ الآنَ لا آتيكَ إِلّا مُسَلِّماً

أَزورُكَ في الشَهرَينِ يَوماً وَفي الشَهرِ

أَزورُكَ في الشَهرَينِ يَوماً وَفي الشَهرِ

So from now on I come to you only to offer greetings,

So now I only come to you in complete submission

I visit you once every two months, or every month.

I visit you one day each month, and one day each year

فَإِن زِدتَني بِرّاً تَزَيَّدتُ جَفوَةً

فَإِن زِدتَني بِرّاً تَزَيَّدتُ جَفوَةً

فَلا نَلتَقي طولَ الحَياةِ إِلى الحَشرِ

فَلا نَلتَقي طولَ الحَياةِ إِلى الحَشرِ

So if you grant me more kindness, I shall grow more aloof,

If you increase your kindness, I will increase my aloofness

Then we shall not meet throughout our lives, until the Resurrection.

So we will not meet for the rest of our lives until the Day of Resurrection
