خَبَرتُI experienced الهَوىlove حَتّىuntil عَرَفتُI learned أُمورَهُits ways
خَبَرتُ الهَوى حَتّى عَرَفتُ أُمورَهُ
وَجَرَّبتُهُand I tried it فيin السِرِsecrecy مِنهُof it وَفيand in الجَهرِopenness
وَجَرَّبتُهُ في السِرِ مِنهُ وَفي الجَهرِ
I experienced love until I learned its ways.
I have long experienced love, and learned its ways,
And I tried it in secret and in the open.
Testing it in secret and openly.
فَلاso neither البُعدُdistance يُسلينيconsoles me وَلاnor القُربُnearness نافِعيbeneficial to me
فَلا البُعدُ يُسليني وَلا القُربُ نافِعي
وَفيand in الطَمَعِhope الأَدواءُailments وَاليَأسُand despair لاnot يُبريheals
وَفي الطَمَعِ الأَدواءُ وَاليَأسُ لا يُبري
So distance does not console me, nor does nearness benefit me.
Neither nearness profits me, nor distance gives comfort.
And in hope lie ailments, and despair does not heal.
In hope lie maladies, and despair brings no cure.
