ذَمَمتُكَI blamed you أَوَّلاًat first حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle
بَلَوتُI tried سِواكَothers besides you عادَturned into الذَمُّblame حَمداpraise
I blamed you at first, but when
I tried others, blame turned to praise.
فَلَمso did not أَحمِدكَI praise you مِنfor خَيرٍany goodness وَلَكِنbut
رَأَيتُI saw سِواكَothers besides you شَرّاًworse مِنكَthan you حَدّاin sharpness or severity
I did not praise you for any goodness, but
I saw others whose evil had a sharper edge than yours.
فَعُدتُso I returned إِلَيكَto you مُجتَدِياًbegging ذَليلاًabject
لِأَنّيbecause I لَمdid not أَجِدI find مِنfrom ذاكَthat بُداan escape
So I returned to you, begging and abject,
because I could find no alternative to that,
كَمَجهودٍlike a famished man تَحامىshunned لَحمَthe flesh of مَيتٍa dead animal
فَلَمّاthen when اِضطُرَّhe was compelled عادَhe returned إِلَيهِto it شَدّاat a run
like a famished man who shunned a dead beast’s flesh,
then, when necessity compelled him, rushed back to it.
