I am the one you know when I am summoned to a raid,

To pierce livers and strike necks.

And when the north wind howls in winter,

How I watch for a guest among my companions!

And my guest is guided in the darkness to hospitality

By the glow of my fire or the barking of my dogs.

Until, when they face him and meet him,

They greet him with wagging tails.

So they almost—knowing what they have been accustomed to

    In this—speak aloud in welcome.
