ماhow أَكثَرَnumerous الناسَthe people لاno بَلrather ماhow أَقَلَّهُمُfew they are
ما أَكثَرَ الناسَ لا بَل ما أَقَلَّهُمُ
اللَهُGod يَعلَمُknows أَنّيthat I لَمdid not أَقُلI say فَنَداfalsehood
اللَهُ يَعلَمُ أَنّي لَم أَقُل فَنَدا
How numerous the people are—no, rather, how few they are!
How many people there are, or rather how few,
God knows that I have spoken no falsehood.
God knows I spoke no boast.
إِنّيindeed I لَأَفتَحُI certainly open عَينيmy eye حينَwhen أَفتَحُهاI open it
إِنّي لَأَفتَحُ عَيني حينَ أَفتَحُها
عَلىupon كَثيرٍmany وَلَكِنand yet لاnot أَرىI see أَحَداanyone
عَلى كَثيرٍ وَلَكِن لا أَرى أَحَدا
Indeed, I open my eye, when I open it,
When I open my eyes, I open them
upon a multitude, and yet I see no one.
Upon a teeming crowd, and yet I see no one.
