يُلَوِّثُhe twists لِحيَةًa beard عَرُضَتgrew broad وَطالَتand grew long
يُلَوِّثُ لِحيَةً عَرُضَت وَطالَت
وَيَمرُثُهاand kneads it كَتَمريثِlike the kneading of الخَميدَهkhamīda (a kind of food)
وَيَمرُثُها كَتَمريثِ الخَميدَه
He twists a beard grown broad and long,
He defiles a beard that once broadened and lengthened
And kneads it as one kneads khamīda.
And combs it like combing a withered palm branch
فَياso, oh! لَكِto you (feminine, exclamatory) لِحيَةًa beard وَضَرىgrease-stained وَشَيباًand gray hair
فَيا لَكِ لِحيَةً وَضَرى وَشَيباً
كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدalready أَكَلتَyou ate بِهاwith it مَضيرَهmaḍīra (a sour-milk dish)
كَأَنَّكَ قَد أَكَلتَ بِها مَضيرَه
So, what a grease-stained beard and gray hair!
What a beard you have, and misery and grayness!
As though you had eaten maḍīra with it.
As if you have eaten rotten meat with it
