يُلَوِّثُhe soils لِحيَةًa beard عَرُضَتgrew broad وَطالَتand grew long
يُلَوِّثُ لِحيَةً عَرُضَت وَطالَت
وَيَمرُثُهاand he kneads it كَتَمريثِlike the kneading of الخَميدَهal-khamīda (meaning uncertain)
وَيَمرُثُها كَتَمريثِ الخَميدَه
He soils a beard grown broad and long,
He soils his beard as it grows long,
And kneads it as one kneads al-khamīda.
And combs it as one combs matted wool.
فَياso, oh لَكِto you (feminine) لِحيَةًa beard وَضَرىgreasy وَشَيباًand gray hair
فَيا لَكِ لِحيَةً وَضَرى وَشَيباً
كَأَنَّكَas though you قَدalready أَكَلتَyou ate بِهاwith it مَضيرَهmaḍīra (a sour-milk stew)
كَأَنَّكَ قَد أَكَلتَ بِها مَضيرَه
Oh, what a greasy beard, and what gray hair!
What a beard you have, and what grief and gray!
As though you had eaten maḍīra with it.
As if you had eaten with it rotten meat.
