وَفي اِبنِ نَهيكٍ وَالقُرونِ الَّتي تَخلو
Have you not seen time’s reversals in the house of Barmak,
Have you not seen time's tyranny on the house of Barmak,
and in Ibn Nahik and the generations that pass away?
And on the son of Nuhayk and the ages long ago?
لَقَدindeed غُرِسواthey were planted غَرسَa planting like that of النَخيلِdate palms تَمَكُّناًfirmly established
لَقَد غُرِسوا غَرسَ النَخيلِ تَمَكُّناً
وَماand not حُصِدواthey were reaped إِلّاexcept كَماjust as حُصِدَwas reaped البَقلُthe herbage
وَما حُصِدوا إِلّا كَما حُصِدَ البَقلُ
They were indeed planted like date palms, firmly established,
Truly they were planted like palms, established and firm.
yet they were reaped only as herbs are reaped.
Yet they were harvested like onions pulled from the soil.
