أَأَسبَلتَhave you let flow دَمعَtears العَينِof the eye بِالعَبَراتِwith weeping
وَبِتَّand you spent the night تُقاسيyou endure شِدَّةَthe severity of الزَفَراتِthe deep sighs
Have you let your eye's tears flow in weeping,
Have you shed tears, crying with sobs,
And spent the night enduring the anguish of deep sighs?
And crying at night, enduring sighs?
وَتَبكيand you weep لِآثارٍfor traces لِآلِof the family of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
فَقَدfor indeed ضاقَhas tightened مِنكَof yours الصَدرُthe breast بِالحَسَراتِwith sorrows
And you weep for the traces of Muhammad's family,
You cry for the Family of Muhammad,
For your breast has grown tight with sorrow.
With a heart tightened by grief.
أَلاah فَاِبكِهِمso weep for them حَقّاًtruly وَأَجرِand make flow عَلَيهِمُover them
عُيوناًeyes لِرَيبِat the calamities of الدَهرِtime مُنسَكِباتِstreaming
Ah, weep for them truly, and let flow over them
Oh yes, cry for them sincerely and be rewarded,
Eyes streaming at the calamities of time.
With eyes pouring for the calamities of fate.
وَلاand do not تَنسَforget فيon يَومِthe day of الطُفوفِal-Tufuf مُصابَهُمtheir affliction

And do not forget their affliction on the day of al-Tufuf,
And do not forget their afflictions on the day of Ghadeer,
And a catastrophe among the greatest calamities.
And the immense tragedy among the greatest tragedies.
سَقىmay water اللَهُGod أَجداثاًgraves عَلىon أَرضِthe land of كَربَلاKarbala
مَرابِعَspring showers أَمطارٍof rain مِنَfrom المُزُناتِthe rainclouds
May God water the graves upon the land of Karbala
Allah watered the land of Karbala,
With spring rains from the rainclouds.
With heavy rains of sorrows.
وَصَلّيand invoke blessings عَلىupon روحِthe soul of الحُسَينِHusayn وَجِسمِهِand his body
طَريحاًlying prostrate لَدىbeside النَهرَينِthe two rivers بِالفَلَواتِin the wilderness
And invoke blessings upon Husayn's soul and his body,
And pray upon the soul and body of Hussein,
Lying prostrate beside the two rivers in the wilderness,
Lying slain in the desert by the two rivers.
قَتيلاًslain بِلاwithout جُرمٍa crime يُناديcalling out لِنُصرَهٍfor aid
فَريداًsolitary وَحيداًalone أَينَwhere أَينَwhere حُماتيmy defenders
Slain without a crime, calling for aid,
Killed unjustly, calling out for help,
Solitary, alone: 'Where, where are my defenders?'
Alone and friendless, "Where are my supporters?"
أَأَنسىshall I forget وَهَذاwhile this النَهرُthe river يَطفَحُoverflows ظامِئاًthirsty
قَتيلاًslain وَمَظلوماًand wronged بِغَيرِwithout تِراتِblood-debts
Shall I forget a thirsty man, while this river overflows,
Can I forget, and here is the river overflowing thirsty,
Slain and wronged, with no blood-debts upon him?
For a slain and oppressed man without guilt?
وَقَدand indeed رَفَعواthey raised رَأسَthe head of الحُسَينِHusayn عَلىupon القَناthe spears
وَساقواand they drove نِساهُhis women حُسَّراًbareheaded وَلِهاتِdistraught
And indeed they raised Husayn's head upon the spears,
They raised the head of Hussein on a spear,
And drove his women onward, bareheaded and distraught.
And drove his women captives, crying and wailing.
فَقُلso say لِاِبنِto the son of سَعدٍSa'd عَذَّبَmay torment اللَهُGod روحَهُhis soul
سَتَلقىyou will face عَذابَthe torment of النارِthe Fire وَاللَعَناتِand the curses
So tell Ibn Sa'd (may God torment his soul):
So say to the son of Saad, may Allah torment his soul,
'You will face the torment of the Fire and curses.'
He will suffer the punishment of hellfire and curses.
سَأَقنُتُI shall supplicate طولَthroughout الدَهرِtime ماas long as هَبَّتِblows الصِباthe east wind
وَأَقنُتُand I supplicate بِالآصالِin the evenings وَالغُدُواتِand the early mornings
I shall offer supplication for all time, as long as the east wind blows,
I will pray forever as long as the wind blows,
And supplicate in the evenings and early mornings,
And pray at dawn and dusk.

وَأَلقَواand they cast رَسولَthe Messenger of اللَهِGod فيinto الكَرَباتِdistresses
Against a people who all strayed from guidance,
For the group who all went astray from guidance,
And cast God's Messenger into anguish.
And threw the Messenger of Allah into afflictions.
