رِسالَةَa message from ناءٍone far away عَنfrom جَنابَيهِhis presence شاحِطِfar removed
رِسالَةَ ناءٍ عَن جَنابَيهِ شاحِطِ
Hark, you two: convey a message from me to the Imam,
Deliver from me to the Imam a message,
a message from one far from his presence, far removed:
A message from a complainer about his sides being rubbed,
بِأَنَّto the effect that اِبنَson of وَهَبٍWahb حينَwhen يَشحَجُbrays شاحِجٌa braying beast
بِأَنَّ اِبنَ وَهَبٍ حينَ يَشحَجُ شاحِجٌ
يُمِرُّhe runs عَلىover القِرطاسِthe paper أَقلامَpens of غالِطِa blunderer
يُمِرُّ عَلى القِرطاسِ أَقلامَ غالِطِ
that Ibn Wahb, whenever a beast brays,
That when the son of Wahb composes, the composer
runs a blunderer's pens over the paper.
Passes his pens over the parchment erringly,
أَحَبَّhe loved بِغالَmules البُردِthe post حُبّاًwith a love مُداخَلاًintimate

يُكَلِّفُهُ إِثباتَها في الشرائِطِ
He loved the postal mules with an intimate love,
He loved the coats of mail with intimate love,
which compels him to record them in the registers.
Charging them with proving it in the scrolls,
وَلَولاand were it not for أَميرُCommander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful لَأَصبَحَتwould have become

And but for the Commander of the Faithful, there would have been
And were it not for the Commander of the Faithful,
the postal mules' cocks as stuffing for the pouches.
The coats of mail would have become stuffing for the maps.
