They announced my death, though none has yet done so but a gloater,

And an enemy whose vital parts have been struck.

They say, “If he tastes death, his poetry dies.”

Far from it! The life of poetry stretches far.

And suppose his poetry dies if he dies—then what of that

Which reciters have carried, and writing holds captive?

I shall settle it with a verse whose message people praise,

And many among the transmitters will carry it:

Poor poetry dies before its authors,

And good poetry lives on, even if its author dies.
