جِئتُ بِلا حُرمَةٍ وَلا سَبَبِ

جِئتُ بِلا حُرمَةٍ وَلا سَبَبِ

إِلَيكَ إِلّا بِحُرمَةِ الأَدَبِ

إِلَيكَ إِلّا بِحُرمَةِ الأَدَبِ

I came with neither a claim upon you nor any tie—

I came with no claim to respect and no tie,

nothing to bring me to you but the claim of letters.

To you, save the respect due to literature.

فَاِقضِ ذِمامي فَإِنَّني رَجُلٌ

فَاِقضِ ذِمامي فَإِنَّني رَجُلٌ

غَيرُ مُلِحٍّ عَلَيكَ في الطَلَبِ

غَيرُ مُلِحٍّ عَلَيكَ في الطَلَبِ

So honor my claim, for I am a man

So fulfill your obligation to me, for I am a man

who will not press you in asking.

Who does not press you in his request.
