اِذكُرRemember أَباO father of جَعفَرٍJa‘far حَقّاًa claim أَمُتُّI plead kinship بِهِthrough it
أَنىthat I وَإِيّاكَand you مَشغوفانِboth enamored بِالأَدَبِof literature
Remember, Abu Ja‘far, a claim of kinship I invoke:
That you and I are both enamored of literature,
وَأَنَّناand that we قَدindeed رَضَعناwe suckled الكَأسَthe cup دِرَّتَهاits milk
وَالكَأسُand the cup دِرَّتُهاits milk حَظٌّa share مِنَin النَسَبِkinship
And that we have suckled the cup’s milk,
And the cup’s milk is a share in kinship.
