فَلَيسَfor … are not بُغاثُthe lowly ones الطَيرِamong birds مِثلَlike عِتاقِهاtheir noble ones
فَلَيسَ بُغاثُ الطَيرِ مِثلَ عِتاقِها
وَلَيسَand … are not الأُسودُthe lions الغُلبُthick-necked مِثلَlike الثَعالِبِthe foxes
وَلَيسَ الأُسودُ الغُلبُ مِثلَ الثَعالِبِ
For the lowly among birds are not like their noble ones.
So the crying birds are not like their nestlings
Nor are thick-necked lions like foxes.
And the mighty lions are not like foxes
وَلَيسَand … are not العِصِيُّthe staves الصُمُّsolid كَالجَوفِlike the hollow ones خِبرَةًwhen tested
وَلَيسَ العِصِيُّ الصُمُّ كَالجَوفِ خِبرَةً
وَلَيسَand … are not البُحورُthe seas فيin النَدىgenerosity كَالمَذانِبِlike the rivulets
وَلَيسَ البُحورُ في النَدى كَالمَذانِبِ
Nor are solid staves like hollow ones when tested.
And the deaf sticks are not like the hollow ones in experience
Nor are seas like rivulets in generosity.
And the seas are not like the clouds in moisture
