أَلاBehold إِنَّماonly الاِنسانُa human being غِمدٌa sheath لِقَلبِهِfor his heart
فَلاso no خَيرَgood فيin غِمدٍa sheath إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنthere is نَصلُa blade
Behold, a human being is but a sheath for his heart.
Alas, man is but a scabbard for his heart
So there is no good in a sheath if it holds no blade.
So no good is a scabbard if there be no blade
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin وَعدٍa promise إِذاif كانَit is كاذِباًfalse
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin قَولٍspeech إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنthere is فِعلُaction
And there is no good in a promise if it is false.
No good a promise if it be untrue
And there is no good in speech if there is no action.
No good a word if it has no deed
فَإِنso if تَجمَعِyou gather الآفاتِthe faults فَالبُخلُthen miserliness شَرُّهاthe worst of them
وَشَرٌّand worse مِنَthan البُخلِmiserliness المَواعيدُpromises وَالمَطلُand delay in fulfillment
So if you gather all faults, miserliness is the worst of them.
But if evils gather, then greed is the worst
And worse than miserliness are promises and delay in fulfilling them.
And worse than greed are broken vows and delay
