مَريضَsick in الخَلايِقِcharacter traits مُلتاثَهاdisordered in them
I came to Ibn ʿAmr and found him
sick in character, his disposition corrupt.

تَروثُdropping dung وَتَأكُلُand eating أَرواثَهاtheir own dung
So my steeds remained at his gate,
dropping dung and eating their own dung,
غَوارِثَfamished تَشكوcomplaining إِلىto رَبِّهاtheir master
أَطالَprolonged السَبيعِيُّal-Sabīʿī إِغراثَهاtheir starvation
famished, complaining to their master:
al-Sabīʿī had prolonged their starvation.
فَأَقبَلتُso I began أَدعوto pray عَلىagainst نَفسِهِhis soul
بِأَنthat يَقسِمَshould divide المَوتُDeath ميراثَهاits estate
So I began to pray against his very soul,
that Death should divide its estate.
وَقَدand indeed قيلَit was said ماwhat قَولَةٌan utterance قالَهاhe uttered it
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them رَوثَةُa turd راثَهاhe shat it
And it was asked, “What was that saying he uttered?”
I told them, “A turd he shat.”
لَقَدindeed ماثَhe mixed مِنfrom جَعسِهِhis shit عِترَةًa fragrant blend

He had mixed a fragrant blend from his own shit,
so I perfumed him with what he had mixed.
وَأَمّاand as for القَوافيthe rhymes فَقَلَّبتُهاthen I turned them over
وَأَخرَجتُand I brought out لِلعَبدِfor the slave أَرفاثَهاtheir foulest
As for the rhymes, I turned them over,
and brought out their foulest for the slave.
قَوافٍrhymes أَبىrefused الوَغدُthe lout إِبريزَهاtheir pure gold
فَأَخلَصتُso I sifted out لِلوَغدِfor the lout أَخباثَهاtheir dross
Rhymes whose pure gold the lout refused,
so I sifted out their dross for the lout:
أَوابِدَwild verses قَدalready حَيَّسَتhad humbled قَبلَهُbefore him

wild verses that had humbled, before him,
mature men and their youths.
إِذاwhen نَزَلَتthey descend فيin دِيارِthe dwellings of العُناةِthe captives

When they descend upon the dwellings of captives,
those cramped dwellings become their graves.
فَكَمso how many حَطمَةٍa crushing blow حَطَمَhas dealt الشِعرُpoetry فيهِupon him
وَكَمand how many عَيثَةٍan act of havoc عاثَهاit has wrought it
So how many a crushing blow has poetry dealt him,
and how much havoc it has wrought!
وَلاand no جُرمَguilt ليis mine أَنthat أَسَأتَyou did badly جَناharvesting (first fragment of جَناة)

ةَcompletion of جَناة: harvesting مَزرَعَةٍof a field كانَhe was حَرّاثَهاits ploughman
Nor am I to blame for your poor harvesting
of a field whose ploughman he was.
وَلاand no ذَنبَblame لِلنارِfor the fire فيin سَفعِهِscorching him

Nor is the fire to blame for scorching him
if he has become its poker.
وَلَيسَand not القَوافيthe rhymes جَنَتdid wrong بَلrather جَنَيcommitted wrong (verb جَنَيتَ continues)

The rhymes did no wrong; rather, you did—
you, who blindly traversed their rugged ground.
نَكَثتَyou unravelled مَرايِرَthe tightly twisted cords of ذاكَthat المَديthe praise (first fragment of المَديح)
حِcompletion of المَديح: praise جَهلاًin ignorance فَقُلِّدتُso I was garlanded with أَنكاثَهاtheir unravelled strands
You unravelled the tightly twisted cords of that praise,
in ignorance, so I was garlanded with their loose strands.
