    Say to al-Amīn, trustee of Muhammad’s House,

    the words of a man concerned for him and speaking in his defense:

    You denied that a benefaction had been falsely attributed to you

    in the matter of Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAṭiyya, the cupper.

    لَكِنَّهُنَّ طَوائِلُ الإِسلامِ

    Benefactions, in his estimation, are no benefactions;

    rather, they are wrongs for which Islam has vengeance to exact.

    Use him to strike the enemy’s breast, for he is

    an army made of plague and pleurisy.
