وَصاحِبٍand a companion مُغرَمٍenamored بِالجودِof generosity قُلتُI said لَهُto him
وَالبُخلُand miserliness يَصرِفُهُturns him away عَنfrom شيمَةِthe disposition of الجودِgenerosity
And to a companion enamored of generosity I said,
To a friend enamored of generosity, I said
Though miserliness turns him from generosity’s ways:
While stinginess turns him from the attribute of generosity
لاdo not تَقضَينَyou fulfill حاجَةًa need أَتعَبتَyou have wearied صاحِبَهاits seeker
بِالمَطلِwith delaying مِنكَon your part فَتُرزاand thus you suffer loss غَيرَnot مَحمودِpraised
Never fulfill a need whose seeker you have wearied
Do not prolong fulfilling a need that has wearied its petitioner
With your delays, only to suffer loss without praise.
With delay from you, so you would be blamed, not praised
كَأَنَّنيas though I رُحتُI departed مِنهُfrom him حينَwhen نَوَّلَنيhe gave me
بِمُدمَجِwith a compact piece الصَدرِof the chest مِنfrom مَتنَيهِboth sides of his back مَقدودِcut away
It was as though, when he gave to me, I left him
It was as if I had smelled from him, when he turned away from me
With a solid piece of his chest, cut from both sides of his back.
With a chest closed tight, turned away from me
كَأَنَّas though أَعضائَهُhis limbs فيin كُلِّevery مَكرُمَةٍact of generosity
يُنزَعنَthey are wrenched out مُستَكرَهاتٍforced against their will بِالسَفافيدِwith roasting skewers
As though his limbs, with every generous deed,
It was as if his limbs, for every act of generosity
Were wrenched out against their will with roasting skewers.
Were being torn out, extracted piece by piece unwillingly
