وَصاحِبٍand a companion مُغرَمٍenamored بِالجودِof generosity قُلتُI said لَهُto him
وَالبُخلُand stinginess يَصرِفُهُturns him away عَنfrom شيمَةِthe habit الجودِof generosity
And to a companion enamored of generosity, I said,
while stinginess turned him from the habit of giving:
لاdo not تَقضَينَever fulfill حاجَةًa need أَتعَبتَyou have wearied صاحِبَهاits seeker
بِالمَطلِthrough delay مِنكَfrom you فَتُرزاand so you suffer غَيرَwithout being مَحمودِpraised
Never fulfill a need after you have wearied its seeker
with your delays, only to suffer and go unpraised.
كَأَنَّنيas though I رُحتُwent away مِنهُfrom him حينَwhen نَوَّلَنيhe handed me
بِمُدمَجِwith something tightly knit الصَدرِof the breast مِنfrom مَتنَيهِhis two sides مَقدودِcut out
When he handed me his gift, it was as though I left him
carrying a tightly knit breast cut from his two sides.
كَأَنَّas though أَعضائَهُhis limbs فيin كُلِّevery مَكرُمَةٍgenerous deed
يُنزَعنَare pulled away مُستَكرَهاتٍunwillingly بِالسَفافيدِwith skewers
It was as though, at every act of generosity, his limbs
were pulled away unwillingly with skewers.
