اِنظُرlook إِلَيهِat him وَإِلىand at ظَرفِهِhis wit
اِنظُر إِلَيهِ وَإِلى ظَرفِهِ
كَيفَhow تَطاياclaimed descent from Tayy (a pun on folding) وَهوَwhile he is مَنشورُunfolded
كَيفَ تَطايا وَهوَ مَنشورُ
Look at him—and at his refinement!
Look at him and at his wit:
How he claims to be of Ṭayyiʾ, though he is unfolded!
How he has claimed descent from Tayy, though he is unfolded!
وَيلَكَwoe to you مَنwho دَلّاكَled you فيinto نِسبَةٍa lineage
وَيلَكَ مَن دَلّاكَ في نِسبَةٍ
قَلبُكَyour heart مِنهاof it الدَهرَforever مَذعورُterrified
قَلبُكَ مِنها الدَهرَ مَذعورُ
Confound you—who steered you toward a lineage
Woe to you! Who led you into a lineage
that leaves your heart forever terrified?
of which your heart is forever terrified?
لَوif ذُكِرَتwere mentioned طَيٌّTayy عَلىat a distance of فَرسَخٍa parasang
لَو ذُكِرَت طَيٌّ عَلى فَرسَخٍ
أَظلَمَwould grow dark فيin ناظِرِكَyour eye النورُthe light
أَظلَمَ في ناظِرِكَ النورُ
Were Ṭayyiʾ mentioned a parasang away,
If Tayy were mentioned a parasang away,
the very light would darken in your eyes.
the light in your eye would go dark.
