ظَلَّتremained بِقُمَّin Qum مَطِيَّتيmy mount يَعتادُهاrepeatedly besets it
ظَلَّت بِقُمَّ مَطِيَّتي يَعتادُها
هَمّانِtwo cares غُربَتُهاits estrangement وَبُعدُand the distance المُدلَجِthe road traveled by night
هَمّانِ غُربَتُها وَبُعدُ المُدلَجِ
My mount remained in Qum, repeatedly beset
My she-camel remained accustomed to Al-Qum
By two cares: its estrangement and the long road by night,
Worried by the strangeness of her distant home
ماemphatic particle بَينَbetween عِلجٍa non-Arab قَدalready تَعَرَّبَadopted Arab ways فَاِنتَمىand then claimed descent
ما بَينَ عِلجٍ قَد تَعَرَّبَ فَاِنتَمى
أَوor بَينَbetween آخَرَanother مُعرِبٍArabic-speaking مُستَعلِجِaffecting non-Arab ways
أَو بَينَ آخَرَ مُعرِبٍ مُستَعلِجِ
Between a non-Arab who adopted Arab ways and claimed Arab descent,
Between an Arabian camp where she was bred
Or another, an Arabic speaker affecting non-Arab ways.
And another makeshift camp of transient abode
