سَأَلتُI asked النَدىgenerosity لاmay ... not عَدِمتُI lack النَدىgenerosity
سَأَلتُ النَدى لا عَدِمتُ النَدى
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas مِنّاfrom us زَماناًfor a time عَزَبwas absent
وَقَد كانَ مِنّا زَماناً عَزَب
I asked Generosity—may I never lack generosity—
I asked the dew when I missed the dew
who had been away from us for a time.
Though we were together for a time in the past
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him طالَgrew long عَهدُtime since اللِقاthe meeting
فَقُلتُ لَهُ طالَ عَهدُ اللِقا
فَهَلso, have ...? غِبتَyou were absent بِاللَهِby God أَمor لَمnot تَغِبyou were absent
فَهَل غِبتَ بِاللَهِ أَم لَم تَغِب
So I said to him, "It has been long since we met.
I said: Long has been since we last met
So, by God, have you been absent, or have you not?"
Did you hide from me or did you not hide?
فَقالَso he said بَلىyes لَمnot أَزَلI ceased غائِباًabsent
فَقالَ بَلى لَم أَزَل غائِباً
وَلَكِنand yet قَدِمتُI came مَعَwith المُطَّلِبal-Muttalib
وَلَكِن قَدِمتُ مَعَ المُطَّلِب
He said, "Yes, I have been absent all along,
He said: Yes I have been absent
but I have come with al-Muttalib."
But I have come with the seeker
