ماnot كُنتُI was إِذwhen طَلَبَتsought يَدايَmy two hands بِكَthrough you الغِنىwealth
إِلّاexcept كَطالِبِlike one seeking خُطبَةٍa speech مِنfrom أَخرَسِa mute man
When my two hands sought wealth through you, I was no more
When my hands sought from you wealth,
Than one seeking a speech from a mute man.
It was like a mute seeking to marry.
وَالمَجدُand glory يُفسِدُهُspoils it اللَئيمُthe base man بِلُؤمِهِthrough his baseness
كَالمِسكِlike musk يَفسُدُis spoiled ريحُهُits scent بِالكُندُسِby kundus (a sneeze-inducing herb)
And the base man spoils glory through his baseness,
And glory is spoiled by the villain with his defects,
Like musk, whose scent is spoiled by kundus.
Like musk - its scent is spoiled by the iris root.
ياO رَبِّmy Lord إِنَّindeed غِنىwealth اللَئيمِof the base man يَسوؤُنيdistresses me
فَاِصرِفso divert غِناهُhis wealth إِلىto الجَوادِthe generous man المُفلِسِthe penniless
O my Lord, the base man's wealth truly distresses me;
O Lord, the wealth of the villain hurts me,
So divert his wealth to the generous, penniless man.
So turn his wealth to the generous but destitute.
