And a soft, green meadow, like a carpet,

Where flowers of every kind bloom,

Laughing when the winds play with them,

    Swaying like a staggering drinker.

So my companions likened its blossoms

To Kisra’s brocade and Yemen’s striped cloth.

So I said: You are wide of the mark; but I

Liken it to the court of al-Hasan—

A young man who sees wealth only as something to give,

And no treasure but stored-up deeds of kindness.
