Thus let him rise who undertakes the cause for God

and fights for it with tawny Rudayni spears.

Rejoice, Commander of the Faithful, in a victory

that came to you from almighty God in due measure.

You held precious wealth cheap for the sake of aiding Him,

so He gave you, for holding it cheap, glory for all time.

And you offered your life, whose like is never offered,

so you were rewarded with swift victory and recompense.

You faced the kings of the Turks when their host came

rushing against God's faith in arrogance and unbelief.

You routed kings: no resolve had been able,

even a monarch's, to attack their immense army.

And you faced them, when they faced you, with a resolve

like that of God's Messenger on the two sides of Badr.

And you charged upon them with a Hashimite onslaught

that made them taste a cup more bitter than aloe.

You left them slain, and the limbs of their proud chiefs

are portioned out among the fish, the wolf, and the vulture.

And it is fitting that one who has risen to defend his faith

with true conviction should be supported by victory.

The Lord of command promised you a worthy match, then led her as a bride

to you, swaying gracefully, when you set the dowry high.

    So she came to you a virgin and turned away no longer one;

how splendid she is for all time—no longer a virgin, yet a virgin!

O battle that bestowed upon all people

security that restored ease in place of hardship!

Happy is he who kindled its scorching blasts of heat,

to be safe on the Day of Presentation from blazing heat.

Oh, would that I had been among its ranks,

so that, in battle, my experience might tell my story.

I would wheel about while the best of men watched my daring

against the battle line, in advance, charge, and retreat,

to meet the Mashrafi swords with my throat in his defense,

and shatter the points of Samhari spears in my breast.

At evening I would go, smeared with crimson blood,

to be at dawn in Paradise, clad in green robes.

And if a remnant of this hated life remained,

I would return the bright sword-blades to red scabbards.

I have presented a poem to the noble gate

that takes the servant's place in praise and thanks.

It shines: it is the necklace's thread, its beauty completed

by the splendid pearls your right hand has strung.

I praised you, hoping to attain a rank

that would adorn my poetry and raise my standing.

Otherwise, one whose praise the Book proclaims

surely has, through it, no need of praise in verse.
