O you who deny my love for him, though he knows

that no deceit intrudes upon my affection.

He spends the night with tranquil eyes, beside repose,

while between my ribs lie the embers of love for you.

You drew away from me when love's separation grew relentless,

and tested my patience when patience had run out.

For had your eyes seen my state at night,

while longing had shaken me and thought had unsettled me,

you would have seen a snakebitten man in an unharmed man's clothes,

and one aflame, his rib cartilage clasped by hair.
