أياO مانعيyou who deny me طيبَthe sweetness of الرُّقادِsleep وانَّنيand indeed I
لأمنحُهُI surely give him ماwhat لاnot يهونُis held cheap فيمنحُand so is bestowed
O you who deny me sweet sleep, though I
O you who hinders my tranquil sleep, yet I
surely give him what is not lightly given.
Would grant him what cannot be slighted when granted
وأسخوand I give generously لهto him بالنفسِwith my soul وهيwhile it عزيزةٌis precious
وأيُّand what فتىًyoung man بالنّفسِwith his soul يسخوgives generously ويسمحُand gives willingly
And I give him my soul freely, though it is precious;
And give generously of myself, though I am precious
and what young man gives his soul freely and willingly?
And which gallant gives generously of his soul and is clement?
يُزحزِحُنيhe pushes me away عنfrom وصلهِunion with him بصدودِهِby his rejection
وليسand there is no لهfor him عنfrom مُهجتيmy heart's core مُتزحزَحُplace of retreat
He drives me away from union with him by his rejection,
He distances me from union with his aloofness
yet he has no escape from my heart's core.
And he has no tenderness for my passion
ويُظهِرُand he displays ليto me جهلاًignorance بفرطِof the intensity of صبابتيmy ardent longing
ولهوَyet he surely عليمٌis well aware كيفَhow أُمسيI pass the evening وأُصبحُand I pass the morning
And he feigns ignorance before me of my intense longing,
And he shows me ignorance in the excess of my ardour
yet he knows full well how I pass my evenings and mornings.
While he is knowing how I spend my evenings and mornings
ألاحِظُهُI glance at him خطفاًfleetingly بإنسانِwith the pupil of مُقلةٍan eye
مدامِعُهاits tears تطفوrise عليهاover it وتطفحُand overflow
I steal glances at him through the pupil of an eye
I observe him suddenly with a woman of scarce means
whose tears rise over it and overflow.
Her tears brimming over her
فيسرحُso roams طرفيmy gaze فيin رياضِthe gardens of جمالهِhis beauty
وللطّرفِand for the gaze فيin روضِthe garden of الملاحةِloveliness مسرحُa place to roam
So my gaze roams through the gardens of his beauty,
So I let my eyes roam in the gardens of his beauty
and in the garden of loveliness the gaze has room to roam.
For the eye has freedom in the meadow of observation
أُغيّضُI make dwindle ماءَthe water of العينِthe eye وهيwhile it دريرةٌflows abundantly
وأكتمُand I conceal زندَthe firestick of الوجدِpassion والزّندُwhile the firestick يقدحُstrikes sparks
I try to make the eye's water dwindle, though it flows abundantly,
I restrain the water of the eye though it is flowing
and conceal passion's firestick, while the firestick strikes sparks.
And I conceal the spark of passion though it flares
وأنَّيand how يغيضُdwindles الماءُthe water والعينُwhile the eye غمرةٌis brimming
ويخفىand is hidden لهيبُthe flame of النارِthe fire والنارُwhile the fire تلفحُscorches
And how can the water dwindle while the eye is brimming,
How can I restrain the water when the eye is immersed
and the fire's flame be hidden while the fire scorches?
And hide the flame of fire when the fire scorches?
