O you who ask my clan's narrators about me,

Whether wealthy freemen or wretched captives,

Ask whoever has come to know my exalted glory,

Or has vied with me in lofty honor.

Each will tell you of a noble man's valor,

Of pure lineage, renowned and astute.

He feeds them in every barren year,

And keeps them safe on every grim day.

He meets armored warriors with a fierce assailant's breast,

Neither weak nor fearful, nor hanging back.

He draws a lustrous sword of Indian steel,

Gleaming in the gloom of a pitch-dark night.

He kept striking them with it as he advanced,

While death watched him with a drowsy eye,

Until he was dyed with their blood:

Indeed, fresh blood is the dye of the horseman's palm.
