O king whose steed traverses the wilderness,

Be gentle with a heart whose desire is to meet you.

You departed with it, then turned back, demanding

An eloquent speaker's reply that none would attempt to fault.

Do you seek meanings, both virgins and matrons,

From a body whose heart has already departed?

Wasting has afflicted my body since you departed,

And sleep has forsaken my eyelid since you went far away.

Nor is it strange, for one whose home lies far from you,

If his ailments and sleeplessness draw near.

O departing one who turned away and left within my heart

A blaze whose fire-kindling sticks have come together.

You made the tear ducts of both eyes flow, and so left

A pool of tears that none can hope will run dry.

And you left me like a wild beast, befriending neither

A companion nor anyone to whom its reins are handed.
