My God, my God, You are most exalted and most knowing

of the true nature of what breasts disclose and conceal.

You are the One looked to in every grave affair,

and feared; You are the judge, the sovereign ruler.

To Your active knowledge I bring my grievance:

can the wronged obtain justice through anything else?

I openly proclaim the wrongdoings of my clan

to the One who knows the hidden secrets of hearts.

I came to them seeking aid and claiming sanctuary,

as one seeking aid and sanctuary does.

In approaching them, we sought aid by turning to them,

as paternal uncles act when sought out.

They gave shelter but no protection; they spoke but kept no faith.

They withheld and clamored; the fainthearted is deluded [wording uncertain].

When we despaired of their aid and gifts,

they hurled lying words at us, mere conjecture.

What I was commanded to keep joined was severed from me,

yet sanctioning the estrangement of kin is forbidden.

She is indeed the one who sought shelter in Your mercy; and whoever

seeks shelter in Your mercy is protected and shown compassion.

    وقاطعُها في نقمةٍ مُتخَرَّمُ

    Whoever keeps her bond lives in blessing, well served;

whoever severs her lives under vengeance, destroyed.

    وذاكَ لأجلِ القطعِ يُقصي ويفصمُ

    For keeping the bond, He brings this one near and first bestows favor;

for severing it, He banishes that one and cuts him off.

I was deceived by being a guest of Ghayz ibn Murrah,

whose guests are protected out of loyalty and honored.

Yet they did not respect the rights of those who came to them,

nor shrink in shame from dishonoring guests.

    وكلُّ مهانٍ فيكَ يعلو ويَعظمُ

    They abased an honored man who humbled himself for You, seeking elevation;

everyone abased for You rises and grows great.

They flaunted their wealth over my poverty before You,

yet everyone poor for Your sake grows rich and prospers.

My King, kings domineer over me with their oppression,

and You are my refuge from them, formidable as they are.

It is protection enough for me that I seek refuge in You,

when a Khatti spear is brandished and a keen sword drawn.

Are You not the One in whose kindness the Friend sought refuge,

while Nimrod haughtily sought to cast him out?

Power tossed him amid the fire's swirling flame,

and its blaze raged and flared in the air.

    وأمرُكَ في الأكوانِ يجري ويَجزِمُ

    You said to it, 'Be,' and its heat was cooled;

Your command takes effect throughout creation and rules decisively.

And Jonah, when he called in hope and fear,

while the whale's dark belly enclosed him,

called to You from within, as it churned its belly,

sometimes following the coast, sometimes heading out to sea.

even at affliction's heart, the one who submits is guarded.

And Jacob, when he came submissively to Your shelter—

for to You the submissive turn in their needs—

when despair drove him back, its burden grown immense,

a greater hope in Your bounty called him on.

You restored his sight to him through the shirt,

when dark, impenetrable blindness had encompassed him.

    كذلكمُ المختارُ يبلى ويَنعمُ

    You replaced his misery with Your blessing upon him;

thus the chosen one is tried and blessed.

And Joseph, when in prison You decreed his kingship,

eyes were turned back toward him, so handsome was he.

You brought both his parents to him,

and his brothers; one affair is ordained for another.

And Moses, on the morning at the sea, while the sea surged,

its billows battering and shattering mountains—

You commanded it, and its surface split obediently

before him, as an arrow-patterned cloak is torn.

    وكلُّ شقيّ فيكَ فهو المُنعَّمُ

    You blessed him with safety after fear;

everyone wretched for Your sake is truly blessed.

And Ahmad, when You hid him so that he might emerge,

a mute cleft in Tihamah concealed him,

while the cauldron of Banu Fihr boiled with hostility,

voicing it openly at times, muttering at others.

It sought to enforce its judgment upon him on earth,

yet Your judgment in heaven is more decisive and sounder.

When victory came to him from You, bringing fulfillment,

that supremacy might appear through him, himself perfected,

    كذلكَ في الأنوارِ يُؤتى المكرمُ

    he came to us with the light of guidance, bestowing honor;

thus, amid lights, the honored one is approached.

    كذلك بالمهديِّ يُهدى المُيممُ

    Through him is guided whoever seeks Your bounty, turning toward You;

thus, through the rightly guided one, the seeker is guided.

By Your names, which their breasts concealed [uncertain reading],

and what they knew of their mystery and thus learned,

and by Your choosing Ahmad after them, O God,

with Your guidance, for he is the final seal, himself sealed—

Help us, help us against our foes, that we may have

victory through You, until they are forsaken and then defeated.

Let us overtake them with its might, in battalions

that batter and demolish the mightiest kings.

Then we shall make them drink a cup like the one they gave us,

and pardon and give freely, though they attacked and reproached us.

We asked a great thing of a mighty One; only

the exalted One bestows the greatest favors.

Thus we hope from You that the family of Muhammad

Abu Bakr will not be despised or wronged.
