    ودمعي على خدَّيكَ منه شهودُ

    My gaze and your heart—a killer and a martyr;

    And my tears upon your cheeks bear witness to it.

    O young gazelle, whose glances—

    How many keen swords and lions fall short of them!

    Who will bring me your dream-image, now that sleep is barred

    From my eyes by separation and sleeplessness?

    May both endure, along with your love; I do not conceal my death,

    And the least I offer for your sake is my life.

    And among the wonders is that your heart has not softened

    Toward me, though Dawud softened iron.
