تبيَّنتُ أنَّ السَّيفَ قد فُلَّ غِمدُهُ

تبيَّنتُ أنَّ السَّيفَ قد فُلَّ غِمدُهُ

وقد كنتُ أرجوهُ لنائبةِ الدّهرِ

وقد كنتُ أرجوهُ لنائبةِ الدّهرِ

I realized that the sword’s scabbard had been broken.

I saw that the sword's sheath is now empty

And I had placed my hopes in it against a calamity of time.

And I had hoped to rely on it in times of distress

فعاندني فيهِ الزَّمانُ وريبُهُ

فعاندني فيهِ الزَّمانُ وريبُهُ

وجاءت صروفُ الدَّهرِ من حيثُ لا أدري

وجاءت صروفُ الدَّهرِ من حيثُ لا أدري

But time and its calamities thwarted me in this.

But time turned against me in this regard

And time’s vicissitudes came from where I knew not.

And the turns of fate came from where I knew not
