إلىuntil كمhow long أُخفّيI conceal الوجدَpassionate longing والدمعُand the tears بائحُrevealing
وكمand how long ارتجيI hope for صبراًpatience وصبريand my patience نازحُfar away
How long shall I conceal my longing, while tears reveal it?
How much longing and tears have I concealed
And how long shall I hope for patience, when my patience is far away?
And how much patience have I feigned when my patience has run out
خلعتُI cast off عِنانيmy reins وانطلقتُand I set forth معwith الصِّباyouthful ardor
وشمَّرتُand I bared عنaway from ساقِthe shin الهوىlove لاnot أُبارحُI depart
I cast off my reins and set forth with youthful ardor,
I let loose my reins and flew with the breeze
And bared the shin of love, never departing.
And bared my legs in passionate love unable to stop
وبيand within me ظبيةٌa doe كحلاءdark-eyed قلبيmy heart كِناسُهاher covert
لذاtherefore جنحتinclined منّيfrom within me اليهاtoward her الجوانحُthe ribs
And within me dwells a dark-eyed doe; my heart is her covert.
I have a gazelle whose heart is like an idol
Thus the ribs within me inclined toward her.
So my soul inclines toward her, yearning
ولوand if لمnot تكنshe were ظبياًa gazelle نِفاراًskittish ومُقلةًand an eye
وجيداًand a neck لماwould not تاقتyearn اليهاfor her الجوارحُthe limbs
And were she not a skittish gazelle, an eye,
If she were not a shy and timid gazelle
And a neck, my limbs would not yearn for her.
My passions would not have craved for her
علىupon لينِsuppleness غُصنِa bough البانِthe bān tree منهاfrom her خمائلٌthickets
وشمسُand the sun الضُّحىthe forenoon منهاfrom her عليهاupon it ملامحُfeatures
Upon the supple bān-tree bough lie thickets from her,
On the soft branch of the acacia are lovesick ones
And the forenoon sun bears features drawn from her.
And the morning sun reveals its features upon it
ولولاand but for سناهاher radiance ماnot تألّقflashed بارقlightning
ولولاand but for هواهاlove of her ماnot ترنّمsang melodiously صادحa songbird
And but for her radiance, no lightning would flash,
If it were not for her radiance no lightning would have glittered
And but for love of her, no songbird would sing.
If it were not for her love no lover would have sung
حننتُI yearned اليهاfor her والغرامُand passion يحُثُّنيurges me on
وقدand indeed ساقَنيdrove me شوقٌlonging اليهاtoward her يكافحُbattles
I yearned for her, while passion urged me on,
I inclined toward her while passion drove me
And longing had driven me toward her, battling on.
And longing for her led me on though I struggled
ولماand when أتانيcame to me طيفُهاher phantom يخبرُprobes الهوىlove
يُوهمنيmakes me believe بالمكرِthrough guile أنّيthat I مُصالحُreconciled
And when her phantom came to me, probing love,
When the phantom of her came to rouse my passion
Making me believe through guile that I was reconciled,
It deluded me into thinking I was reconciled
تذكَّرتُI remembered ربعَthe abode الأنسintimacy عنby أيمنِthe right-hand side الحِمَىthe sanctuary
وأغصانُand branches بانٍa bān tree دونهُbefore it تتَناوحُsway to and fro
I remembered the abode of intimacy, to the right of the sanctuary,
I remembered the abode of joy beyond the protected sanctuary
While bān branches before it swayed to and fro.
While the branches of the acacia swayed beneath it
فكادتso it nearly تطيرُflies النفَّسُthe soul مِنfrom فرطِexcess شَوقِهاits longing
الىto عالمٍa realm فيهin it النُّفوسُthe souls سوابحُswimming
So the soul nearly flew from its overwhelming longing
My soul almost took flight from the intensity of its longing
To a realm where souls swim,
To a world where souls swim freely

Their spirits brought near in the realm of eternity,
The gathering place of souls in the eternal world
Drawn close to their Lord, never departing.
Is a gathering near their Lord never moving away

Pure wine is passed round to them, its seal
Circling them is the soft fragrance of fulfillment
Of musk, its fragrances reviving you.
Musk that restores life with its scent

Gardens are over them, their fruits within reach,
Gardens close to them, clusters ready for plucking
And in their shade is what imaginations never dreamed of.
In whose shade is what no imagination has wished for
هنالكَthere منwhoever لمnot يأتهِreach it فهوthen he is خاسرٌa loser

There, whoever does not reach it is a loser,
Whoever does not reach there is truly lost
And whoever settles there is, without doubt, a winner.
And whoever settles there is undoubtedly triumphant
