He sighed from a longing that had taken hold in his breast,

and concealed it in the hidden recess where secrets lie.

Thus he betrayed what his ribs enclosed,

as telltale smoke betrays the embers.

A lovesick man, anguished by his love for ʿAlwa,

and when the wind's hand tickles it in passing,

you see it radiant in bloom, smiling-mouthed—

and meets him whenever she is sure it will yield milk,

and guards him even from a sidelong glare,

fearing for him—and mishaps are many—

    the imagined hurt where tiny ants might alight;

who left him at dawn to seek spring pasture for him

in the expanse of a valley with meadows and pools,

only to be startled by the sound of his bleating,

his ordained fate having come upon her as decreed,

of the spotted kind, broad-chested and narrow-waisted,

unerring when he approaches gazelles by stealth,

swift when he approaches them in the open,

    صقيلةُ مجرى الخطّ أنقِطَ بالحبرِ

    gleaming like a scribe's page,

    smooth along the course of its script, dotted with ink;

who saw him from afar tearing her fawn's carcass

with a fang that pierces and a claw that rends—

descending into hollows and climbing over rises.

with white domed canopies above black she-camels,

traversing the vast barren desert at a swift trot.

They appeared like the sails of ships,

moving through a sea of rippling mirage.

free of its bonds while it remained captive.

thus, you two, does the deceiver deal with the guileless.

O heart, if you obey me in His path,

you will be rightly guided and granted noble gifts at the Gathering.

wealth and children, a maternal uncle and kin by marriage.

I shall forsake a dominion whose endurance cannot be hoped for,

for union with a King who never perishes through all time.

has risen beyond the station of the seven radiant stars—

    لديها ولا مدُّ الفراتِ بذي وفرِ

    nor does the Euphrates' flood bring abundance;

wastelands for swift trotting and galloping, without

pack-saddled tawny camels or saddled chestnut horses.
